After the controlled, collective effort of the team time trial, the 2026 Tour de France gets its first proper taste of the mountains on stage 3. The general classification, currently a tightly-packed list of names separated by seconds, will begin to find its true shape on the roads from Catalonia into the French Pyrenees. This is the first day where individual strength, climbing legs, and explosive power will define the outcome.

For the race's main protagonists – Jonas Vingegaard in yellow, the imperious Tadej Pogačar, and a determined Remco Evenepoel – the stage offers the first real opportunity to land a blow. The long, attritional day culminates in a short, steep ramp to the finish line, a perfect launchpad for an ambush and a chance to claim a stage win, bonus seconds, and an early psychological advantage.

Route & context

The day begins in Granollers, a city just north of Barcelona steeped in commercial history, its medieval grain market, 'La Porxada', a testament to its past. The peloton will need similar energy for the day ahead, as the flag drops and the race heads immediately north towards the mountains that form the border between Spain and France. An early test comes in the form of the Côte de Saint Feliu de Codines (7.6 km at 4.5%), its gentle but long slopes providing the perfect terrain for a breakaway to form and escape the clutches of the peloton.

Once the escape is established, the route settles into a long, rolling journey through the heart of Catalonia, passing through towns like Vic and Ripoll, the latter home to a Benedictine monastery once a great cultural centre of the medieval world. For the riders, however, there will be little time for sightseeing. This middle section is about conserving energy, as the profile gradually, almost imperceptibly, tilts upwards.

The character of the stage changes dramatically after the intermediate sprint in Planoles. The road rears up for the first category one climb of the Tour, the Col de Toses. At 9.3 km with an average gradient of 6.5%, it is a serious ascent that will provide the first major selection of the day. The pace set by the GC teams here will determine whether the breakaway can hold its advantage. After cresting the summit at nearly 1,800 metres, the riders descend towards the border town of Puigcerdà, crossing from Spain into France.

The final 45 kilometres are far from straightforward. The route passes through the high-altitude training hub of Font-Romeu and over the uncategorised but draining Col du Calvaire before a final descent. The destination is the ski resort of Les Angles, and the sting in the tail is the final climb to the finish line. The ramp is just 1.7 km long, but its 6.5% average gradient will feel far steeper after almost 200 kilometres of racing. It is here that the stage, and perhaps the first chapter of the 2026 Tour, will be decided.

What to expect

Stage 3 presents a classic tactical dilemma. The parcours is perfectly suited to a strong breakaway, and many teams will arrive at the start in Granollers with the sole ambition of placing a rider in the day's move. The early climb will be furiously contested, and if a large, powerful group gets away, they could build a lead substantial enough to contest the stage victory among themselves.

Behind, the GC teams must decide their strategy. Jonas Vingegaard's Team Visma | Lease a Bike squad, holding the yellow jersey, may be content to let the breakaway succeed and relinquish the lead to a rider who poses no long-term threat. However, the explosive nature of the final climb is too tempting for others to ignore. Tadej Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG, in particular, will see this as a prime opportunity to win the stage and claw back time. If they, or another team like Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, choose to control the race, the breakaway's advantage will be mercilessly eroded on the slopes of the Col de Toses, setting up a thrilling battle among the favourites on the final ramp to Les Angles.

Prediction

While a breakaway has a strong chance, the allure of a stage win and bonus seconds will be too much for the GC favourites to pass up. We think Tadej Pogačar will prove too explosive on the final ramp to Les Angles. His dominant form this season, combined with a finish that perfectly suits his characteristics, makes him the clear favourite to take his first stage win of this Tour.
