Riley sprints to breakthrough Pal Arinsal victory
Bjorn Riley sprinted to his first World Cup victory in Friday's thrilling XCC race at Pal Arinsal, narrowly beating overall series leader Adrien Boichis (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) to the line. The American took a breakthrough win in the final metres of a hard-fought race in Andorra.
The Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe rider finished just one second behind Riley. Christopher Blevins crossed the line three seconds down on the winner to round out the podium.
Despite missing out on the stage win, Boichis's second-place finish was enough to consolidate his commanding lead in the overall standings, adding valuable points to his season-long tally.
The short track race in the Andorran mountains was aggressive from the start. On the opening laps, Adrien Boichis was quick to make his presence felt, moving to the front of the pack and controlling the pace.
The lead group remained tightly packed for much of the race, with several riders jostling for position on the technical course. With two laps to go, Boichis was prominent, making several tactical moves to stay in the ideal position near the head of the race.
The bell for the final lap signalled an increase in intensity. A crash in the leading group thinned the contenders, setting up a showdown between Bjorn Riley and Boichis. In the final metres, the two went shoulder-to-shoulder in a drag race to the finish, with Riley just getting the better of the Frenchman on the line.
