Backstedt bests the bunch in Tour de Suisse sprint

Zoe Backstedt (CANYON//SRAM) powered to a convincing victory in a bunch sprint on stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse Women 2026. The British rider showed impressive speed in the final metres to hold off Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) in second and Shari Bossuyt (AG Insurance-Soudal Team) in third.

The stage concluded with a mass arrival, with the top 20 riders all credited with the same finish time. The result caused no major shifts in the general classification, as the main contenders finished safely within the peloton ahead of more challenging terrain to come.

The third stage of the race, run over relatively flat terrain, was always destined for the sprinters. An early breakaway animated the first few hours, but their advantage was never allowed to grow to a threatening level.

The peloton, marshalled by the sprinters' teams, kept the escapees on a tight leash. Teams like CANYON//SRAM, working for Backstedt, and Human Powered Health for Williams, did the majority of the pace-setting to ensure the breakaway was brought back.

The catch was made with just over 10 km remaining, setting up a high-speed finale. Lead-out trains fought for position through the final turns before Backstedt launched her move perfectly, finding a clear path to the line to hold off a strong challenge from Williams.
