Van Aert unleashes dominant sprint to win Stage 5
Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) claimed a commanding victory on stage 5 of the Tour Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes 2026. He launched his effort with 200 metres to go and pulled clear with a second acceleration, leaving Hugo Hofstetter (NSN Cycling Team) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) to take second and third.
Race leader Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) finished safely in the bunch to retain his yellow jersey. His narrow lead remains intact heading into the decisive mountain stages.
A flat stage profile made a sprint finish likely, but a six-rider breakaway formed early. The group – Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step), Thibault Guernalec (Team TotalEnergies), Julen Arriola-Bengoa (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Felix Engelhardt (Team Jayco-AlUla), Hugo Houle and Senna Remijn (both Alpecin-Premier Tech) – built a lead that peaked at two and a half minutes.
The sprinters' teams, led by Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Bahrain Victorious, controlled the gap carefully. The inevitable catch was made with 12 km remaining, setting up a high-speed run-in to the line.
Cofidis took control for Bryan Coquard inside the final two kilometres, but were overwhelmed by Visma | Lease a Bike just before the flamme rouge. Perfectly placed, Van Aert launched his sprint and a second acceleration in the final 150 metres saw him win by a clear margin.
Analysis
- Van Aert's victory was a masterclass in positioning and power. His team delivered him perfectly, and a second kick in the final metres showed he is a level above the other sprinters here.
- The decisive tactical move was Visma | Lease a Bike's late surge past Cofidis. They timed their takeover perfectly just before the final kilometre, leaving rivals no time to reorganise.
- Alex Baudin and EF Education-EasyPost navigated a tricky flat stage without incident to defend the yellow jersey. The real test comes in the mountains, where his 12-second lead will be under pressure.
- Cofidis committed their train too early and were swamped, highlighting the superior power and timing of the Visma lead-out that left other sprinters unable to challenge.
