Wiebes powers to yellow on Tour de France Femmes opener

Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) powered to victory in an uphill sprint to win stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes 2026, claiming the first yellow jersey of the race. On the tough finishing ramp of the Côte de Cadoudal in Plumelec, Wiebes out-kicked Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal Team) and Demi Vollering (FDJ United-SUEZ).

The chaotic opening stage saw a significant crash inside the final 30 kilometres. Despite the incident, most of the main general classification contenders finished safely in the front group on the same time as the winner.

The 78.4 km opening stage was animated by an early two-rider breakaway featuring Laura Tomasi (Uno-X Mobility) and Maud Rijnbeek (VolkerWessels Cycling Team). Rijnbeek attacked her companion on the Côte de Botségalo, cresting it solo to claim the first mountains jersey before being reabsorbed by the peloton.

A large crash on a narrow bridge with 29 km to go split the race, bringing down several riders including Mavi Garcia (UAE Team L’IMAD) and Liane Lippert (Movistar Team). Lippert's teammate Marlen Reusser stopped to help before fighting her way back to the front group to secure a top-ten finish.

The pace was high on the final climb, the Côte de Cadoudal. An attack from Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) inside the final kilometre was neutralised late, setting up a reduced bunch sprint where Wiebes proved strongest.
