Wiebes wins chaotic sprint as Garcia is caught at the last

Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) claimed victory in a chaotic uphill sprint on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes 2026, perfectly delivered by her team. The Dutch sprinter overhauled a heartbroken Mavi Garcia (UAE Team L’IMAD) in the closing metres after the Spaniard's courageous solo attack from 10 km out was neutralised on the final climb into Quimper.

Behind Wiebes, Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) took second place, with the evergreen Marianne Vos (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) finishing third.

The day's big winner in the general classification was Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal Team). Her high placing in the bunch was enough to see her take the coveted yellow jersey, level on time with Vos.

The 151 km stage into Brittany was animated from the start. After an early solo move from Franziska Koch (FDJ United-SUEZ) was contained, the day's main breakaway formed on the slopes of the Côte de Menez Quelerc'h. Silke Smulders (Liv AlUla Jayco), hunting mountains points, forced the pace and was eventually joined by a small group including Maud Rijnbeek (VolkerWessels Cycling Team) and Maeva Squiban (UAE Team L’IMAD).

The peloton kept the escapees on a tight leash, and the race ignited with 22 km to go when Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney (CANYON//SRAM) and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) attacked on the bonus sprint climb. Their move was brought back by the determined chasing of Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal Team), setting the stage for a dramatic finale.

With 10.8 km remaining, Mavi Garcia launched her bid for glory. The Spanish veteran quickly built a lead of over 15 seconds and held it tenaciously as Team SD Worx-Protime marshalled the frantic chase for Wiebes. Garcia hit the final climb into Quimper with the peloton on her heels and was finally caught with just 300 metres to go, paving the way for Wiebes to unleash her winning sprint.
