Vingegaard into yellow as Visma dominate opening TTT
Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) is in yellow after powering his team to victory in the opening team time trial of the 2026 Tour de France.
The Dutch squad stopped the clock at 21:47 for the 19.6 km course in Barcelona. Their time was eight seconds clear of a resilient Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team, with Tadej Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG third at 12 seconds.
The short, technical course, culminating in a climb through Montjuïc Park, provided the first test for the GC contenders and immediately opened small but significant time gaps.
The 19.6 km team time trial through Barcelona was a technical test culminating in a decisive final climb. Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team set a formidable early benchmark of 21:55, with Filippo Ganna driving the British squad home despite losing Joshua Tarling to a puncture.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike timed their effort to perfection. After key turns from Matteo Jorgenson and Davide Piganzoli, Jonas Vingegaard launched up the last climb to drive the team home, shaving eight seconds off the leading time.
Last off the ramp, UAE Team Emirates-XRG looked threatening. Tadej Pogačar stormed up the final climb to set the fastest individual time on the ascent after turns from Brandon McNulty and Isaac del Toro, but it was not enough to overhaul Visma | Lease a Bike, and his team settled for third.
Analysis
- Jonas Vingegaard and Team Visma | Lease a Bike landed the first psychological blow. A 12-second advantage over Tadej Pogačar is a perfect start, forcing their biggest rival onto the back foot from day one.
- Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team's performance was arguably the ride of the day. To lose a powerhouse like Joshua Tarling to a puncture and still finish just eight seconds down shows immense strength and on-road adaptation.
- Pogačar's blistering time up the final climb confirms his explosive form. While his team lost time, Pogačar's individual strength earned him the first polka dot jersey and sent a clear message he is ready to attack.
- Lidl-Trek's solid ride was rewarded with the white jersey for Juan Ayuso. He is well-placed among the young rider contenders, and the team limited its losses to the top squads.
- The small time gaps are significant. While not race-winning, they put pressure on teams like UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe to be more aggressive in the coming stages.
