Pogačar demolishes rivals on first Tour summit finish
Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) delivered a brutal demonstration of his climbing prowess to win Thursday's stage 6 of the Tour de France 2026. Attacking solo on the final summit finish, the Slovenian proved to be in a class of his own on the first significant mountain test of this year's race.
The devastation in his wake was clear at the finish. Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) fought to limit his losses but was the closest challenger, crossing the line 2 minutes and 38 seconds down.
Behind him, a select group containing Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and Pogačar's own teammate, Isaac del Toro, finished 2:57 adrift. The stage completely reshapes the general classification, giving Pogačar a commanding lead.
The 185 km stage was always expected to provide the first major GC shake-up. A powerful trio soon formed at the head of the race: Victor Campenaerts (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Intermarché), and Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla).
UAE Team Emirates-XRG, working for Tadej Pogačar, assumed control and carefully managed the breakaway's advantage before catching them on the lower slopes of the final ascent. The pace immediately fractured the peloton, with contenders like Egan Bernal (Netcompany INEOS Cycling Team) among those distanced early.
With the lead group whittled down, Pogačar launched his decisive attack with several kilometres remaining. There was no response, as Jonas Vingegaard was isolated and Remco Evenepoel struggled to follow. Pogačar extended his lead all the way to the line to celebrate a massive victory.
Analysis
- Tadej Pogačar's victory was a masterclass in controlled aggression. By waiting until the final climb to deliver a single, decisive attack, he not only won the stage but demoralised his opposition with the sheer scale of the time gaps.
- The strength of UAE Team Emirates-XRG was on full display. They controlled the entire stage, neutralised a dangerous breakaway, and dismantled the peloton on the final climb, with Isaac del Toro still finishing third.
- For Jonas Vingegaard and Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the day was about damage limitation. Losing over two and a half minutes is a major setback, but his status as the clear 'best of the rest' confirms he is Pogačar's primary challenger.
- Remco Evenepoel survived his first major mountain test but showed clear limitations. Losing almost three minutes and being unable to follow Vingegaard's chase confirms that long ascents remain a challenge.
- The GC battle has been reset. Pogačar is in a commanding position, forcing every other contender to rethink their strategy, while the fight for the podium places behind him looks wide open.
