Merlier masters mass sprint to win Tour de France stage 12
Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) unleashed a powerful sprint to claim victory on Thursday's stage 12 of the Tour de France 2026, a day destined for the fast men.
In the bunch finish in Chalon-sur-Saône, Merlier proved too strong for Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech), who finished second and third respectively.
The flat 179.1 km stage offered a rare moment of respite for the overall contenders, who all crossed the line in the main peloton with no time losses.
The stage from Nevers Magny-Cours, beginning with a lap of the Formula 1 circuit, was always expected to conclude in a bunch sprint. Its profile featured three category-four climbs, but none were steep enough to trouble the sprinters' teams.
A small breakaway animated the early racing, but their lead was carefully managed by the peloton. The teams of the main sprinters, including Soudal Quick-Step, Alpecin-Premier Tech, and Decathlon CMA CGM Team, kept the gap under control.
The escapees were caught well ahead of the finale, setting up a high-speed showdown. After the final categorised climb was crested with just under 20 km to go, the lead-out trains jostled for position on the flat run-in to Chalon-sur-Saône, where Merlier was launched to a convincing win.
Analysis
- Soudal Quick-Step's lead-out was perfectly executed. On a wide, flat finish that demanded raw power, they controlled the final kilometres and delivered Tim Merlier in the ideal position to launch his sprint.
- Olav Kooij's second place is another strong confirmation of his quality. Getting so close to Merlier demonstrates his excellent positioning and speed, marking him as a consistent threat in any bunch finish.
- For Jasper Philipsen and Alpecin-Premier Tech, third place will feel like a missed opportunity. On a day suited to their powerful train, they were outmanoeuvred in the final kilometre.
- The general classification teams achieved their primary goal of navigating the stage without incident, keeping their leaders safe in the bunch ahead of the decisive mountain stages to come.
