Evenepoel bests Pogačar in summit showdown on stage 15

Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) won stage 15 of the Tour de France 2026, out-sprinting Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) in a tense battle on the final mountain-top finish.

The two GC titans went head-to-head on the steep upper slopes of the final climb, distancing all other rivals. Evenepoel proved the stronger in the final metres, taking a victory that reshuffles the general classification.

Pogačar's teammate, Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), was the best of the rest, crossing the line just six seconds in arrears to claim third place and cap a dominant team performance.

The 15th stage promised a GC showdown, and a strong breakaway formed early, including Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Georg Zimmermann (Lotto-Intermarché). Their advantage, however, was always kept in check by the peloton.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG took command of the main group, with Nils Politt and Tim Wellens setting a formidable pace. As the race hit the lower slopes of the final climb, the escapees' lead evaporated under the pressure and the catch was made.

With the peloton whittled down, Tadej Pogačar launched a blistering acceleration. Remco Evenepoel immediately locked onto his wheel, and the duo quickly gapped the other favourites, with only Isaac del Toro able to stay in contact. In the final kilometre, Pogačar opened up the sprint, but Evenepoel had the power to come around him and take a significant stage win.

• Remco Evenepoel's victory is a massive statement. By matching Tadej Pogačar's accelerations and beating him in a sprint, he proved he can challenge for the overall title in a direct, head-to-head triumph.
• UAE Team Emirates-XRG executed a near-perfect strategy, setting up Pogačar and placing Isaac del Toro third. It was a huge display of collective strength, but they will be disappointed they couldn't dislodge Evenepoel for the stage win.
• The time gaps have created a new GC hierarchy. With riders like Paul Seixas and Florian Lipowitz finishing nearly a minute down, and the next group over two minutes behind, the podium contenders are now clearly defined.
• Isaac del Toro continues to be the revelation of this Tour. His ability to hang so close to Evenepoel and Pogačar on a brutal summit finish is a phenomenal performance for a young rider, all but securing his hold on the white jersey.
• Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe played their tactics perfectly, conserving energy before trusting Evenepoel to handle the UAE train. With Florian Lipowitz also finishing fifth, they had support at the sharp end of the race.
