Veenhoven wins chaotic Catalunya opener for Visma

Nienke Veenhoven (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 2026, leading a dominant team 1-2 ahead of teammate Marianne Vos. The win came from a reduced bunch after a large crash inside the final 8 km fractured the peloton on the run-in to Santa Susanna.

Valentine Fortin (Cofidis Women Team) rounded out the podium in third place. The stage, which started and finished in the coastal town of Santa Susanna, featured two early categorised climbs, but the day's main drama was reserved for the flat, frantic finale.

The opening 100 km stage around Santa Susanna featured two early climbs, the Coll de Pollastre and the Alt de Collsacreu. An early breakaway formed, from which Laura Molenaar (VolkerWessels Cycling Team) attacked to go solo with just under 50 km remaining.

The peloton, marshalled primarily by FDJ United-SUEZ, never gave the lone leader much rope and made the catch well ahead of the finale. The run-in was then marred by a large crash with 7.4 km to go, which split the field and took down several riders, including Maud Oudeman (Team Visma | Lease a Bike).

In the ensuing chaos, Visma | Lease a Bike took control, executing a perfect lead-out in the final kilometre. Nienke Veenhoven launched off the wheel of Marianne Vos to take a clear victory, with her experienced teammate sitting up to celebrate and secure second place.

Analysis

  • Team Visma | Lease a Bike's tactical execution in the final kilometre was flawless. Despite losing Maud Oudeman in the late crash, they reorganised to deliver a textbook lead-out for a dominant 1-2 finish.
  • The crash at 7.4 km to go was the day's decisive moment. It neutralised several potential contenders and their lead-out trains, turning a full bunch sprint into a battle between the few who avoided the chaos.
  • Laura Molenaar's solo effort was brave but ultimately doomed. The peloton, led by teams with sprinters, never allowed her a significant advantage on a stage with a flat run-in.
  • FDJ United-SUEZ's hard pace-setting on the Alt de Collsacreu showed their hand. They aimed to set up sprinter Ally Wollaston, who finished ninth, but were outmanoeuvred by the Visma train.
