Gruel sprints to victory on Route d'Occitanie stage 1

Thibaud Gruel (Groupama-FDJ United) has won the opening stage of the 2026 Route d'Occitanie, taking victory in a bunch sprint.

The Frenchman proved fastest in the dash to the line, holding off Madis Mihkels (EF Education-EasyPost) and Axel Zingle (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who finished second and third respectively.

With the win, Gruel moves into the overall lead of the four-day race and pulls on the first leader's jersey.

The first stage of the Route d'Occitanie concluded with the widely expected bunch sprint, with a large group arriving at the finish together to contest the honours.

After 4 hours, 10 minutes and 18 seconds of racing, the peloton remained largely intact, with no time gaps separating the top 20 finishers. This set the stage for a classic showdown between the sprinters.

In the final charge to the line, Thibaud Gruel timed his effort perfectly to take the win for Groupama-FDJ United. He crossed the line just ahead of Madis Mihkels and Axel Zingle to secure an important victory.

Analysis

  • Thibaud Gruel's victory is a significant result for the Groupama-FDJ United rider, beating out riders from WorldTour teams like EF Education-EasyPost and Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
  • The mass sprint finish means the general classification battle is yet to begin. All the main contenders will have finished safely in the bunch, with the race to be decided on more selective terrain.
  • Team TotalEnergies placed two riders in the top 10 with Valentin Retailleau (fourth) and Joris Delbove (eighth), a strong team performance but ultimately a missed opportunity for a win.
