Augé wins stage 2 after Isidore is relegated for irregular sprint

Ronan Augé (Unibet Rose Rockets) has won a dramatic second stage of the Route d'Occitanie 2026 after the first rider across the line, Noa Isidore (Decathlon CMA CGM Team), was relegated by the race jury.

The decision promoted Augé to the top step, with Matteo Moschetti (Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) elevated to second place and Axel Zingle (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) rounding out the revised podium.

The finale was marred by a crash inside the final two kilometres and a frantic, physical battle for position, culminating in the controversial finish.

The flat stage 2 parcours was always destined for a bunch sprint. A six-rider breakaway was kept on a tight leash, primarily by Groupama-FDJ United, who worked to set up their sprinter, Thibaud Gruel. The last escapee was caught with 11 km remaining.

Groupama-FDJ United formed a powerful train inside the final 5 km, but the fight for position intensified behind them. With 1.9 km to go, a high-speed crash on the left side of the road took down several riders, including sprint contender Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burpellet BH).

In the final kilometre, Decathlon CMA CGM surged forward, with Johannes Staune-Mittet positioning Isidore. Isidore launched his sprint with 200 metres to go and crossed the line first in a physical, shoulder-to-shoulder battle, but commissaires later relegated him for an irregular sprint, handing the victory to Augé.

Analysis

  • Groupama-FDJ United's textbook tactics were undone in the final 300 metres. After controlling the race all day, their lead-out was swamped in the chaos, a harsh reminder of how quickly sprints can change.
  • Noa Isidore's relegation is a tough but correct call. Decathlon CMA CGM's aggressive tactics put him in a winning position, but his deviation crossed a line, serving as a hard lesson in sprint discipline.
  • The crash at 1.9 km to go removed contender Daniel Cavia and added to the finale's chaos, underlining the dangers of a high-stakes bunch sprint.
  • Ronan Augé's win is a reward for sprinting cleanly. He kept his line in the frantic finale and inherits a major victory for Unibet Rose Rockets.
