Christie-Johnston foils the sprinters on Gyeongnam Stage 2
Alastair Christie-Johnston (CCACHE x BODYWRAP) has claimed victory on Stage 2 of the Tour de Gyeongnam 2026, winning a tense two-man sprint against Cristian Raileanu (Li Ning Star). The duo emerged from a late breakaway, holding a slender advantage over a fast-closing peloton on the flat run-in to Tongyeong.
Christie-Johnston's teammate, Liam Walsh, won the bunch sprint for third place six seconds behind, capping a hugely successful day for the Australian continental team.
On a predominantly flat stage along the Tongyeong coastline that seemed destined for a bunch sprint, an early breakaway animated proceedings. Riders including Tommaso Dati (Team UKYO) and Jongwon Lim (LX Cycling Team) were active, but the peloton kept their advantage tenuous.
The race ignited mid-stage when the original break fractured and a powerful counter-attack launched. This chase group, which included Cristian Raileanu, successfully bridged across to form a new, more dangerous lead selection that put the sprinters' teams under pressure.
From this group, Alastair Christie-Johnston and Raileanu emerged as the strongest. The pair attacked in the closing kilometres and committed fully, holding just enough of a gap to contest the victory as the peloton thundered across the line six seconds later.
Analysis
- CCACHE x BODYWRAP executed a perfect tactical race. Placing Alastair Christie-Johnston in the winning move and having Liam Walsh fresh to win the bunch sprint for third demonstrates both opportunism and strength.
- Li Ning Star showed their collective power, placing three riders in the top five. While they missed the stage win with Cristian Raileanu, their strong presence in the finale bodes well for the coming stages.
- This stage was a classic upset for the sprinters' teams. On a day that looked tailor-made for a mass finish, the peloton misjudged the strength of the breakaway and left the catch just a few seconds too late.
- The victory is a significant one for the Australian continental outfit CCACHE x BODYWRAP, proving they can compete and win against strong squads on the UCI Asia Tour.
- The six-second gap between the winning duo and the peloton highlights the fine margins in professional cycling. A few hundred metres more, or a slightly more organised chase, and the result would have been completely different.
