Berta holds off Blunk for maiden World Cup win in La Thuile

In a dream result on home soil, Martina Berta won her first elite UCI Cross-Country World Cup, responding with power and poise on the final lap in La Thuile.

Wearing the Italian national champion's jersey, Berta held off a ferocious late challenge from Savilia Blunk to seal an emotional victory. Blunk finished a brilliant second, 12 seconds in arrears, after setting up a thrilling finale.

Laura Stigger rode a consistent race to finish third, 55 seconds behind the winner.

The race began aggressively, with Sina Frei and Evie Richards among the early leaders. It was Ronja Blöchlinger, however, who made the first significant move, attacking on a climb to complete the first lap with a clear advantage.

Behind Blöchlinger, a chase group formed featuring Martina Berta and Savilia Blunk. On the third of seven laps, Berta bridged across, but just as they came together, Blöchlinger suffered a suspected mechanical. Berta immediately capitalised, attacking to take a solo lead.

As Blöchlinger faded, Blunk emerged as the sole challenger. On the penultimate lap, Blunk put in the fastest lap of the race, slashing Berta's lead to just four seconds at the bell. Berta responded instantly on the final lap's first climb, launching a decisive counter-attack that Blunk could not match to secure a memorable victory.

Analysis

  • Martina Berta showed immense composure. When Savilia Blunk closed the gap to four seconds, Berta used the first climb of the final lap to launch a perfectly timed, race-winning counter-attack.
  • Blunk's phenomenal penultimate lap may have cost her the victory. She expended huge energy to force the final-lap showdown, leaving her unable to respond to Berta's immediate acceleration.
  • A suspected mechanical just as Berta made contact undid Ronja Blöchlinger's dominant opening. Fighting back for a top-five finish shows her resilience.
  • Laura Stigger’s podium was a reward for intelligent pacing. While others went out hard and faded, Stigger rode consistently, moving through the field in the latter stages to secure third place.
  • Winning a World Cup is special, but doing so on home soil in the national champion's jersey is a dream scenario. Berta clearly fed off the energy of the Italian crowd.
