In cycling, we’re often conditioned to believe that more money buys less weight, more performance, or more comfort. But what if a £32 saddle from AliExpress offered a comparable experience to a £330 model from a major brand?

That’s the premise of a head-to-head comparison from BikeRadar, pitting the Trek Aeolus RSL AirLoom against the generically-branded Ryet X6P 3D-Printed Saddle.

The price gap is enormous. The Trek costs a hefty £329.99 / $424.99 / €349.99, while the Ryet, sourced from AliExpress, cost the presenter just £32.06 / $43 / €38.

For the price of the Trek, you could buy ten of the Ryet saddles and still have change for a celebratory pizza. The question is, would you want to?

The promise of the printed pad

First, what is a 3D-printed saddle? It isn't a solid lump of plastic, but instead uses a complex lattice structure – typically a liquid polymer set by UV light – to create the padded upper.

The core promise of this technology is ‘zonal cushioning’, a fancy way of saying some parts can be made softer than others.

Traditional foam saddles have a mostly uniform density. With 3D-printing, engineers can design a soft nose to relieve pressure, while making the areas under the sit bones progressively firmer for support.

As the BikeRadar presenter noted of the budget Ryet, “You can feel the differences in squidginess.” This tuneable support is the technology's biggest selling point.

On the bench

A workshop inspection revealed key differences. The Trek is a well-finished product from a major manufacturer, while the Ryet is a generic open-mould design.

The presenter noted the Ryet's long rails offered a huge range of fore-aft adjustment. Its nose padding was also, as promised, noticeably softer than the rear.

The saddles were inspected on the bench, but the real test isn't about a few grams. It's about what happens on the road.

The ride test: shape over squish

The test was simple and subjective: the presenter swapped the saddles onto his personal bike for back-to-back rides. First up was the premium Trek Aeolus RSL AirLoom, which replaced his standard foam-padded Trek Aeolus saddle.

The verdict was blunt. Because the shape was identical to his standard foam saddle, the on-bike feel was much the same. He said, “The shape is absolutely identical, and that's really the thing that makes the most difference.”

The subtle benefits of the 3D-printed padding were lost because the fundamental ergonomics hadn't changed. The takeaway is crucial: if a saddle shape doesn't work for you, a fancier padding material won't fix it.

Next came the £32 Ryet, and the on-bike impression was immediate. “It is definitely softer under my sit bones,” the presenter reported. The different construction translated into a tangible difference in feel.

Whether 'softer' is 'better' is a matter of personal preference. But the cheap saddle delivered a more noticeable change than the expensive one.

The real verdict: it's about fit, not tech

This comparison highlights a fundamental truth of cycling comfort: shape is king. The most advanced materials are secondary to a saddle’s width, curvature, and form matching your anatomy and riding position.

The presenter makes an excellent point often overlooked in the rush for new gear. If you’re experiencing discomfort, particularly on the nose of the saddle, the first thing to check isn't the material, but the bike fit.

“I would sort those things first before I paid loads of money for a super expensive saddle, I think,” he advises. A saddle set too high or a reach that’s too long is a far more common culprit for pain than foam density.

So, should you buy a £30 3D-printed saddle from AliExpress? It’s a low-cost way to see if the technology’s claims of zoned comfort work for you, but it’s a gamble.

The long-term durability of the lattice and rails is a complete unknown. There’s also no warranty support or local bike shop to turn to if it fails.

The £330 Trek isn’t a bad product, but this test suggests its primary benefit is for riders who already love the Aeolus shape and are seeking a marginal gain in comfort, regardless of price.

For everyone else, the message is clear: find a shape that fits you perfectly first, perhaps using test saddles from a local shop. Before spending £300 to solve a comfort problem with new tech, make sure it’s not a £100 bike fit problem in disguise.
