The concept of a single bike frame that can swap between a motor and a standard bottom bracket is seductive. But is it a genuine solution or a home mechanic's nightmare?

Every so often, an idea surfaces in the bike industry that feels like pure, distilled common sense. The modular bike frame is one of them. Sparked by a recent discussion on the GMBN Tech Show, the concept is simple and deeply appealing: what if one frame could be the foundation for both your e-bike and your regular, unassisted mountain bike?

On paper, the logic is flawless. You buy one high-quality frame and then choose your adventure for the day. Companies like Antidote Solutions and the Vessel Bike Project have already explored this territory, chasing the holy grail of the 'one bike' quiver-killer.

The appeal is obvious: one frame, two entirely different riding experiences, fewer complete bikes clogging up the garage, and potentially, a lower overall cost. But as with any promise that sounds too good to be true, the devil is in the details—or in this case, the wiring, the bolts, and the potential for water ingress.

The Mechanical Reality Check

The dream of a quick, painless swap bumps up against a harsh reality. As one of the GMBN presenters rightly pointed out, modern bikes, and e-bikes in particular, are not designed for repeated, major disassembly. They are complex, integrated systems.

His concern was blunt and practical: “The more you take these things apart, put them back together, the more often they go wrong or water ingress, potentially.” This isn't just cynical pessimism; it’s a reflection of workshop reality.

Every time you unplug a connector, you risk damaging a pin. Every time you remove and reinstall a motor, you are re-torquing critical fasteners. Every time you open up the frame's internals, you create an opportunity for moisture and grit to find their way inside.

Think about the components involved. An e-bike system involves a motor unit, a battery, wiring looms, and specific mounting hardware. Converting it to an 'analogue' bike means removing all of that, sealing off the now-empty cavities, and installing a new bottom bracket assembly.

This isn't a five-minute job with a multi-tool in a car park. It’s a proper workshop task, and doing it repeatedly is asking for trouble—creaks, stripped threads, and electrical gremlins.

A Compromise in Both Directions?

Even if the swap were mechanically simple and reliable, there’s a bigger question of compromise. A frame designed to house a motor and a hefty downtube battery must be inherently stronger, stiffer, and heavier than a frame designed without those constraints.

When you ride it in its unassisted format, you're still pedalling a frame that is overbuilt for the task. You shed the weight of the motor and battery, but you can't shed the frame's intrinsic e-bike DNA.

Conversely, is a frame designed for modularity ever going to be as optimised as a dedicated e-MTB? Probably not. The very need to make the motor and battery removable can dictate frame shapes and suspension layouts in ways that a fully integrated, non-removable system doesn't have to worry about.

The result is a bike that is likely a compromised version of both things: a heavier-than-necessary analogue bike, and a potentially less-integrated e-bike. Specialised tools for specialised jobs almost always outperform the multi-tool.

The Verdict: A Fascinating Problem, Not a Practical Solution

Despite the very real hurdles, the appeal of the concept is undeniable. The GMBN presenter conceded as much, saying, “I like the idea that you could adapt one bike to do many things.”

And he’s right. The idea is great. It speaks to a desire for efficiency, value, and versatility that resonates with many riders.

But for now, it remains more of an intellectual exercise than a practical solution for the majority of riders. The risk of introducing mechanical issues, combined with the inherent design compromises, means you're likely better off with two separate, dedicated bikes.

The modular frame is a solution to a problem that, for most people, is better solved by simply having two different bikes. It’s a fascinating piece of engineering and a fun concept to debate, but until the swap becomes as foolproof and tool-free as changing a wheel, it’s likely to remain a niche for the dedicated tinkerer, not the future for the rest of us.
